I just started reading “Let’s Talk About Hard Things” by Anna Sale (as in, I’m still in the introduction), and it’s already making me think about so many different things.
This last year and half has been an absolute shit show, we can agree, right?
I know lots of positive things have happened too, but damn. We’re still in a global pandemic and everything we thought we knew has been uprooted in very uncomfortable ways for months and months (and months)
As life is seemingly returning to some sense of normalcy, whatever that means, it’s really got me thinking.
Is normal something we should really aspire to return to?
Life is fucking rough sometimes, my dudes. And I’m tired of pretending everything is all hunky dory for this blog or social media or small talk in real life or whatevs. Are you?
So many people are or have been in financial ruin. Plans have been derailed. Dreams have been dropped. Hopes have been dashed.
And no amount of “good vibes only” or positive thinking or manifestation is going to change all of that.
We can’t pretend this last year and a half (and all the other bad choices that came before that time period) didn’t happen. We can’t just say “oh well” and continue on as if nothing has changed.
What we can do is pick ourselves up and talk to each other.
We need to talk about real things more. We need to talk about hard things more. We need to talk more, period.
Let’s talk about death and sex and money and love and loss and grief and happiness and sorrow and unbridled joy and something whimsical and music and disappointments and expectations and hopes and dreams and failures and wins and mistakes and happy accidents and everything in between.
We need to talk about all of it, the full spectrum of life, to really appreciate it and our place in it all. None of it means anything without self-awareness, and I think it’s time for us to stop trying to just skate by in life.
So what do you want to talk about today?
